Tanya Morand – Funambule-Plaza

March 23rd to April 30rd, 2023

Opening reception in the presence of the artist on Friday, March 24 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Galerie.a presents Funambule-Plaza, an exhibition of the most recent works of Tanya Morand. As a sequel to the SPIN-PLAZA project initiated in 20.., the artist returns with her compositions intertwining architecture in splits and arabesques, but this time placing the human figure at the center to celebrate the soft mobility of people through the cities in which we live.

True to her practice, Tanya Morand’s latest works resonate with her personal experience of the city. Her images highlight the contrasts between urban density and the openness of the parks and public spaces that flourish there.

At the heart of these urban scenes, we find pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders and acrobats. In the eyes of the artist, these figures in movement reinvent the city as a more ecological and congenial place. Through composite and non-linear views, leading our gaze through different layers of space, the artist invites us to create new links between vernacular and monumental architecture, nature in the city and the communities that abound there.

Tanya Morand compares her collages – at the origin of her paintings – to a D.J.’s process of composing music. In a similar manner, she draws, cuts and combines her vast photographic repertoire gleaned from her own wanderings. Through a practice that spins between photography, collage, drawing, printmaking and painting, the artist transforms her visual material, lending poetry and a reaffirmed sense of meaning to the urban spaces that bring people together.
