Quebec City, April 25, 2019—Galerie.a is pleased to invite you to the opening of SPIN-PLAZA by the artist Tanya Morand. The artist is presenting some of the works of her recent exhibition Cosmopolites en fentes et arabesques, previously presented in Beauport.  Galerie.a offers a closer look at a smaller selection of these works, which resonate with the patrimonial architecture of this new gallery space in Old Quebec City.

Photos taken on her daily rambles, which are reinterpreted and integrated with drawing, painting and silkscreen printing, are an essential element of Tanya Morand’s artistic practice.

With SPIN-PLAZA the artist reconfigures her photos as collages and then reworks them into larger paintings. Inspired for the most part by two visits to Madrid, she reinterprets the urban context, mixing imagery of vernacular architecture, city parks, and the daily passage of people.

Cutting through views of cities and neighbourhoods, the artist creates contrasts with colour and arabesque-like forms, blurring the boundaries between photography and painting. Her compositions present fragments of European cities and accentuate the qualities and heterogeneous realities of cities in perpetual evolution.

Tanya Morand, sensitive to the limitless growth of cities that annihilates natural environments, suggests with her imagery a metamorphosis of urban spaces; making them more serene, accessible and green.

An active member of the artist-run centre Engramme, she is presently producing a new body of work involving silkscreen.

Galerie.a, in short

Galerie.a, founded in April 2018 by Anne D’Amours Mc Donald, is an art gallery based in Quebec City specialized in the international promotion of present-day artists. By the implementation of events, special projects, fairs and exhibitions in Quebec and abroad, the gallery tends to develop an international network of artists and collectors who will benefit Quebec present-day art.

Located in the Old Port of Quebec, at 17, de la Barricade Street, Suite 306, the gallery aims to be an exhibition space close to the art community. By establishing its roots in a building regrouping more than thirty creators, the gallery wants to draw artists and collectors closer together. Intended to become a new destination for present-day art enthusiasts, this new space will host about ten guest artists each year.
